The Rifle Range Amphitheatre

An outdoor theatre and recreation space on the coastal walkway, owned by Auckland Council.

The Rifle Range is an outdoor theatre and recreation space on Bomb Point Drive, along the coastal walkway. It is not a shooting range. The name comes from the site’s history. The space is administered and owned by Auckland Council.

What is there

Beside the stage there is an open gravel forecourt with fixed timber benches, a concrete table-tennis table and public toilets. All of it is open to anyone at any time, and none of it needs booking: the permit below is only for closing the space to the public.

Booking the space for an event

The venue can accommodate organised events for large groups, commercial events, or private functions that require closing the space to the public. These bookings are assessed individually.

To reserve the space, apply for an event permit on the Auckland Council website at least 20 working days before your intended event date. The Council reviews applications within five working days to determine whether an event permit is required, or whether the space can be used as a public area. Processing fees vary depending on the type of activity.
