SUMMARY:HP Garden Ramble
DESCRIPTION:If you’re home on November 16 you won’t want to miss the lovely bi-annual local Garden Ramble. This FREE event is just a fortnight away. All the details can be found here on this HP Garden Ramble 2019 + Address List or you can view below. If you are unable to print a copy at home\, hard copies are available at the House of Travel Hobsonville or the Information Centre behind Catalina Cafe.\n\n\nThis is the 3rd Garden Ramble to be held at Hobsonville Point and is held every two years so don’t miss out. There are 16 wonderful gardens you may visit. Bring your camera\, questions & curiosity. Additionally\, there are experts on-site (landscape gardeners\, composite decking\, cedar painter\, house washing and composting). You may also visit our Community Garden\, Kaipatiki Project at Engine Bay and House of Travel will have details of gardening tours.\n\n\nLimited on time? – check out all the garden features you are most interested in and go to those gardens first view the addresses below. Most houses here have small or sometimes no front yards. But tucked away in quiet corners behind houses are lovely spots where residents have created their own quiet oases full of colour and lush texture\, and with pleasant sitting areas.\n\n\nThis is a free event\, put on by locals for locals\, and made possible by residents generous enough to allow visitors to wander by. It’s a nice social event too\, as you can meet new people and chat about planting and landscaping with people whose outdoor areas are of a similar size to yours. These gardens\, spread around the Point\, will reveal how even tiny spaces can be beautiful.\n\n\nThe owners of these 16 gardens have graciously volunteered or been persuaded to make their gardens available. They do not claim to be experts but they do wish to encourage others to enjoy gardening and outdoor living as much as they do.  \nThere is a range of styles\, sizes and plant selections. Some gardens have been established for a few years\, and some are newly planted. Some gardens were designed by professionals and others were created by enthusiasts. The owners will be available to discuss what has worked and what has been less successful.  \nIf your time is limited\, check the HP Garden Ramble 2019 + Address List and narrow down your search. If time is on your side\, you can easily spend the whole day wandering from garden to garden. So you can find all the lovely gardens on show on Nov 16 in the Hobsonville Point Garden Ramble. It’s all set for you to enjoy between 10am and 4pm.    \nHP Garden Ramble Flyer – all you need to know

There will be plenty of fun activities and ice cream stops around the whole loop to keep the kids interested\, and the walk connects a number of parks\, including Harrier Point playground on Launch Road (featuring a giant bucket swing and flying fox overlooking the water)\, and the award-winning Hobsonville Point playground on Buckley Avenue. SUMMARY:Spring Garden Trim ’n ’Tidy - POSTPONED
DESCRIPTION:Update:  \n \n************************************************** \nNow that everything’s growing like crazy\, it’s nearly time for flexible garden waste bins to be placed around the Point so you can weed\, trim and prune and get rid of all the clippings. \nBack in early winter we put out 14 bins\, mostly in older streets where planting has become lush enough to need a trim. Here’s the location map we distributed last time. Bins were dropped where you see red stars marked on the map – and a few of those places were so popular they needed two or three bins.\n \nPlease check out the map. If we did not put a bin near your place last time\, and you think you and your neighbours could fill one\, please email hobsonvillepoint@crockers.co.nz to provide your suggested location and put BIN LOCATIONS in the subject line. We may be able to rejig distribution by spreading the bins around. \nNB The bins are for GARDEN WASTE ONLY\, not ordinary household rubbish. \nBy the way\, we know many of you are keen for the Society to spread the good Berms\, Beers & Barbecue idea (as run by Sunderland A residents) all over the Point. \nWe haven’t had time to organise that but you can do it yourself. If  you share a  laneway\, street or terrace block – why not get your neighbours together that weekend around someone’s barbecue and make it a social event. \nFill a flexibin during the day and\, as the sun sinks\, cook up something tasty for the kids\, share drinks and snacks with your neighbours and reward yourselves for making your street look great! \nGARDENING TIPS \nObviously\, yank out unsightly weeds!. There are thistles and prickly things springing up everywhere – and if you’re living anywhere near a phoenix palm you need to watch out for new spiky seedlings.  They’re easy to dig out when they’re small but very hard to deal with as they get bigger. \nBut even ornamental plants need attention. Beds of pretty dietes lilies have been putting on a great show this spring around Hobsonville Point but their white and purple flowers are now dying off.  If you have them in your garden or in front of your fenceline\, here’s how to have them look just as good next season… \nWhite dietes \nOnce the flowers have turned brown\, those stalks need deadheading. If you don’t trim them back\, the plants will drop seeds and soon you’ll have ever-growing numbers of unruly clumps full of shabby brown stalks. \nThere are many areas planted with hebe’ as well.  Most are New Zealand natives and are pretty hardy but they also benefit from some TLC after their pink flowers have died away. Trimming them back ensures good flowering next spring and also stops them becoming too leggy\, which makes them susceptible to a sucking insect called scale. \nPink hebes \nNow the weather’s warming up (finally!) it’s a good idea to attend to those small tasks and chuck the clippings in the garden waste bins. Date reminder: the weekend of Oct 27-28. \nThis time around\, they’ll be Green Gorilla flexibins.
