SUMMARY:Garden clean-up weekend\, Nov 9-10
DESCRIPTION:Here’s your Springtime opportunity to clip and trim overgrown plants on your property\, tackle the weeds\, and dispose of them in flexible garden-waste bags located around the Point.  \nIf you’re not sure what is yours to do\, note that at the front of your house you’re responsible for tidying any planted area between your home and your side of the footpath.  \nBags will be put out on Thursday\, Nov 7\, so you have the following weekend to get busy in. \nWe’re confident you’ll want to contribute to keep our neighbourhood looking its beautiful best! Read on for bin locations near you.  \nSixteen bags are being distributed (three more than last time) and will be collected again when full. Please don’t overfill them\, because if they’re spilling over with waste the contractors may not uplift them. There are fewer bins in newer zones because plant growth there is still immature. \nBelow the black stars are the Clean Up weekend bin locations on the map or the street names below to find one near you. \n \nHP Clean Up Weekend Bin Locations \n\nCorner Buckley Ave and de Havilland Drive\nCorner Buckley Ave and Harvard St\nStation St\, midway along rear stretch\nCorner Station St and Toheroa St\nCorner Kittyhawk Way and Meteor Drive\nCorner Corsair St and Harvard St\nOnekiritea Road and Chaffinch St by waterpark\nCorner Ponga St and Kotuku Lane\nKanuka Rd\, on the curve by Kotuku Lane\nBomb Point Drive\, opposite end of Tuatua Rd\nLester St\, halfway along\nTorea Tai Rd\, close to the petanque area\nHastings St\, near the Information Centre carpark\nIsitt Rd\, grassed area opposite No 27\nTeal Way\, end of the cul de sac at edge of the wide turning circle\nFrances Bryers Road\, opp No 27\, on grass on cnr of Buckley Ave\n\nThey usually fill up fast so\, please\, ONLY GARDEN WASTE\, WEEDS AND FLAX. SUMMARY:Sparkle Parade!
DESCRIPTION:Sat\, June 29\, 5-7pm. FREE. Come dressed to glow in the dark and join us for the SPARKLE PARADE as we form a glittering trail from The Oval (off Hudson Bay Road) down to Catalina Bay. \nIf you don’t know where The Oval is\, it’s the big open space next to the two-storey vintage houses on the waterfront. To get to it\, head left down Hudson Bay Road\, which runs off Hobsonville Point Road. You know where the old yellow air force hangars are? Hudson branches off just before the one on the left. There will be no parking on Hudson Bay Road\, so if you need to get there by car\, park nearby and then walk. Or take the bus! For safety’s sake\, a traffic management plan will in place between 5 and 6pm. Hobsonville Point Road will be open as usual.\n\nhttps://vimeo.com/343797027 \nEnjoy hot beverages\, pick up some glow sticks\, bright toys and LED lights – $5 per pack – and go on a glittering walk down to and around Catalina Bay to enjoy lively music\, food\, and a Glow Circus Zone offering fun with illuminated poi\, hoops and juggling balls. \nThe Sparkle Parade is all about you getting involved – you ARE the parade. So come dressed in your best ‘glow in the dark’ sparkly outfit and you could win prizes – hampers from Ryman Healthcare\, one of four whizzy LED-lit umbrellas – like the one in the video above – or a super backpack plus a $50-off voucher for your next travel booking at Hobsonville Point House of Travel. \nThere’ll be food trucks and performances from the Hobsonville Point Secondary School’s kapa haka group and the Hobsonville Choir. PLUS music from The G Strings and Omega Levine. Delicious food options at the end of the parade will include dumplings\, hot dogs\, hamburgers\, gelato and homemade baking from our lovely Hobsonville Point Mums! And the kids will love the the Glow Circus Play Zone\, staged by the crew from Highly Flammable\, where they can play with LED-lit hula hoops\, poi\, juggling balls and more. \n    \nProudly supported by:\n

SUMMARY:Spring Garden Trim ’n ’Tidy - POSTPONED
DESCRIPTION:Update:  \n \n************************************************** \nNow that everything’s growing like crazy\, it’s nearly time for flexible garden waste bins to be placed around the Point so you can weed\, trim and prune and get rid of all the clippings. \nBack in early winter we put out 14 bins\, mostly in older streets where planting has become lush enough to need a trim. Here’s the location map we distributed last time. Bins were dropped where you see red stars marked on the map – and a few of those places were so popular they needed two or three bins.\n \nPlease check out the map. If we did not put a bin near your place last time\, and you think you and your neighbours could fill one\, please email hobsonvillepoint@crockers.co.nz to provide your suggested location and put BIN LOCATIONS in the subject line. We may be able to rejig distribution by spreading the bins around. \nNB The bins are for GARDEN WASTE ONLY\, not ordinary household rubbish. \nBy the way\, we know many of you are keen for the Society to spread the good Berms\, Beers & Barbecue idea (as run by Sunderland A residents) all over the Point. \nWe haven’t had time to organise that but you can do it yourself. If  you share a  laneway\, street or terrace block – why not get your neighbours together that weekend around someone’s barbecue and make it a social event. \nFill a flexibin during the day and\, as the sun sinks\, cook up something tasty for the kids\, share drinks and snacks with your neighbours and reward yourselves for making your street look great! \nGARDENING TIPS \nObviously\, yank out unsightly weeds!. There are thistles and prickly things springing up everywhere – and if you’re living anywhere near a phoenix palm you need to watch out for new spiky seedlings.  They’re easy to dig out when they’re small but very hard to deal with as they get bigger. \nBut even ornamental plants need attention. Beds of pretty dietes lilies have been putting on a great show this spring around Hobsonville Point but their white and purple flowers are now dying off.  If you have them in your garden or in front of your fenceline\, here’s how to have them look just as good next season… \nWhite dietes \nOnce the flowers have turned brown\, those stalks need deadheading. If you don’t trim them back\, the plants will drop seeds and soon you’ll have ever-growing numbers of unruly clumps full of shabby brown stalks. \nThere are many areas planted with hebe’ as well.  Most are New Zealand natives and are pretty hardy but they also benefit from some TLC after their pink flowers have died away. Trimming them back ensures good flowering next spring and also stops them becoming too leggy\, which makes them susceptible to a sucking insect called scale. \nPink hebes \nNow the weather’s warming up (finally!) it’s a good idea to attend to those small tasks and chuck the clippings in the garden waste bins. Date reminder: the weekend of Oct 27-28. \nThis time around\, they’ll be Green Gorilla flexibins.

SUMMARY:Gathering 2.0
DESCRIPTION:We’re looking to the future\nand want your ideas\nDear Residents\, \nYour committee has begun work on a long-term plan for this great place we live in. \n \nWe believe your society needs to have a firm foundation on which to push towards fulfilling our idea of creating the best possible future for Hobsonville Point\, not just short-term but for the next five years or so. \nAt a recent one-day workshop we came up with this mission statement\, which is to build and maintain: \nan embracing\, vibrant\, village style community \nBut the committee doesn’t ‘own’ the society to which we belong. You do. We all do. \nThat’s why we want to hear your views. \nWe have a draft plan we’d like to share with you. We believe it’s important to have not just airy ideas of how we’d like life to be on the Point\, but a sound action plan to ensure projects are managed efficiently and well and we are making best use of the funds to which everyone contributes every year. \nYou are therefore invited to: \nGATHERING 2.0 \nWHERE \nHobsonville Point Primary School \nWHEN \nJULY 22 (next Sunday) 2pm \nEveryone welcome. No need to register ahead of time. NB It’s at the primary school – not the secondary school\, where we had our first gathering in April. \nWe know this is short notice but the end of this committee’s term is approaching and we have a lot to do! Can’t make it? Be assured we will make the draft public so you can offer feedback. Then\, with everyone’s views on board\, we will put the plan to the community for approval at our annual general meeting on October 24.
