SUMMARY:Make compost the easy way
DESCRIPTION:If you’re keen to make compost from your kitchen scraps and want to do it in a small-scale kind of way\, you can register for a free Bokashi session at the Catalina Community Garden. It’s on Feb 17\, 10am to 11.30. \nBokashi is a Japanese concept that can be translated as ‘fermented organic matter’. Bokashi ‘pickles’ your food waste\, unlike traditional composting where waste is allowed to decay. It produces nutrient-rich compost that you can dig into your garden. \nJust register here.

SUMMARY:Bling on Point - Joy of Diwali
DESCRIPTION:You’re welcome to enjoy a splash of Indian fun\, dance\, music and bling at HQ (214 Buckley Ave) on Saturday evening\, Nov 24\, from 5pm. Residents Amar and Dee Trivedi are organising this as a local tribute to Diwali – the Festival of Lights. \nIt’s the Hindu New Year\, celebrated all over the world to signal the triumph of light over darkness\, good over bad and to welcome in peace and prosperity. \nThere’s a $10 charge to help cover expenses (though kids under 10 are free) but they’ve also got great support from HQ\, as the venue; Indian Summer\, supplying Indian eats and snacks; and Hobsonville Countdown\, providing beverages and refreshments. \nChuck on your ethnic gear or simply something bright\, as there’s a prize for best dressed male and female. \nExpect live Indian music and dancing\, henna painting\, authentic decorations and a traditional welcome. It’s great to see residents creating and running bright and happy events like this that everyone can enjoy! \nIf you use Facebook you can see more about it under Events\, where you can also indicate if you’re planning to go. Go to Bling on Point The Joy of Diwali.

You can choose to do the whole loop\, or just part of it. There are points of interest\, food\, drinks and activities spaced the whole way round. Is the event kid-friendly?Absolutely! There will be plenty of fun activities and ice cream stops around the whole loop to keep the kids interested\, and the walk connects a number of parks\, including Harrier Point playground on Launch Road (featuring a giant bucket swing and flying fox overlooking the water)\, and the award-winning Hobsonville Point playground on Buckley Avenue. The walk is pram\, cycle and scooter-friendly for little ones. Is this a sustainable/green event?Yes. Please bring your reusable water bottles and coffee cups. Can I bring my dog?Sure thing. However\, we’re expecting a lot of people for the Gala Opening weekend\, so please keep this in mind. Is it wheelchair-friendly?Yes. Some of the walkway is boardwalk\, some footpath\, and the rest is reasonably flat\, graded gravel. SUMMARY:Spring Garden Trim ’n ’Tidy - POSTPONED
DESCRIPTION:Update:  \n \n************************************************** \nNow that everything’s growing like crazy\, it’s nearly time for flexible garden waste bins to be placed around the Point so you can weed\, trim and prune and get rid of all the clippings. \nBack in early winter we put out 14 bins\, mostly in older streets where planting has become lush enough to need a trim. Here’s the location map we distributed last time. Bins were dropped where you see red stars marked on the map – and a few of those places were so popular they needed two or three bins.\n \nPlease check out the map. If we did not put a bin near your place last time\, and you think you and your neighbours could fill one\, please email hobsonvillepoint@crockers.co.nz to provide your suggested location and put BIN LOCATIONS in the subject line. We may be able to rejig distribution by spreading the bins around. \nNB The bins are for GARDEN WASTE ONLY\, not ordinary household rubbish. \nBy the way\, we know many of you are keen for the Society to spread the good Berms\, Beers & Barbecue idea (as run by Sunderland A residents) all over the Point. \nWe haven’t had time to organise that but you can do it yourself. If  you share a  laneway\, street or terrace block – why not get your neighbours together that weekend around someone’s barbecue and make it a social event. \nFill a flexibin during the day and\, as the sun sinks\, cook up something tasty for the kids\, share drinks and snacks with your neighbours and reward yourselves for making your street look great! \nGARDENING TIPS \nObviously\, yank out unsightly weeds!. There are thistles and prickly things springing up everywhere – and if you’re living anywhere near a phoenix palm you need to watch out for new spiky seedlings.  They’re easy to dig out when they’re small but very hard to deal with as they get bigger. \nBut even ornamental plants need attention. Beds of pretty dietes lilies have been putting on a great show this spring around Hobsonville Point but their white and purple flowers are now dying off.  If you have them in your garden or in front of your fenceline\, here’s how to have them look just as good next season… \nWhite dietes \nOnce the flowers have turned brown\, those stalks need deadheading. If you don’t trim them back\, the plants will drop seeds and soon you’ll have ever-growing numbers of unruly clumps full of shabby brown stalks. \nThere are many areas planted with hebe’ as well.  Most are New Zealand natives and are pretty hardy but they also benefit from some TLC after their pink flowers have died away. Trimming them back ensures good flowering next spring and also stops them becoming too leggy\, which makes them susceptible to a sucking insect called scale. \nPink hebes \nNow the weather’s warming up (finally!) it’s a good idea to attend to those small tasks and chuck the clippings in the garden waste bins. Date reminder: the weekend of Oct 27-28. \nThis time around\, they’ll be Green Gorilla flexibins.

SUMMARY:Gathering 2.0
DESCRIPTION:We’re looking to the future\nand want your ideas\nDear Residents\, \nYour committee has begun work on a long-term plan for this great place we live in. \n \nWe believe your society needs to have a firm foundation on which to push towards fulfilling our idea of creating the best possible future for Hobsonville Point\, not just short-term but for the next five years or so. \nAt a recent one-day workshop we came up with this mission statement\, which is to build and maintain: \nan embracing\, vibrant\, village style community \nBut the committee doesn’t ‘own’ the society to which we belong. You do. We all do. \nThat’s why we want to hear your views. \nWe have a draft plan we’d like to share with you. We believe it’s important to have not just airy ideas of how we’d like life to be on the Point\, but a sound action plan to ensure projects are managed efficiently and well and we are making best use of the funds to which everyone contributes every year. \nYou are therefore invited to: \nGATHERING 2.0 \nWHERE \nHobsonville Point Primary School \nWHEN \nJULY 22 (next Sunday) 2pm \nEveryone welcome. No need to register ahead of time. NB It’s at the primary school – not the secondary school\, where we had our first gathering in April. \nWe know this is short notice but the end of this committee’s term is approaching and we have a lot to do! Can’t make it? Be assured we will make the draft public so you can offer feedback. Then\, with everyone’s views on board\, we will put the plan to the community for approval at our annual general meeting on October 24.
