A self-seeding Phoenix Palm, currently about 40cm high

The big, majestic palms in the park by Catalina Café should soon be trimmed as the Society has asked Auckland Council, which maintains that area, if the dead brown fronds around their crowns can get some attention. Ditto the ones closer to Squadron Drive.

These trees self-seed, naturally, so if your home is close to a big palm do keep an eye out within your own fencelines for new, sprouting seedlings.  They grow fast and the spikes are very sharp – so it’s best if they’re removed while still very small. A few that have appeared in the garden strip just outside the café will shortly be taken out.
